Studying fine arts at uni
Choosing the arts
At the end of high school I knew that I wanted to go to university. For a long time I thought I wanted to study environmental science, but I ended up changing my mind completely and switching to arts.
I did studio art in year 12 and it was really fun, but I realised I wasn’t into making art, I was more into the museum and institution side of arts. That’s why I’m studying history and curation. I really like the degree, it’s a small cohort so it kind of feels like a high school classroom. I know who everyone is. I’m in my final year at the moment, and I’m in the process of applying for honours.
Moving on res
I moved to Mannix College when I started at Monash, and then I moved out with friends who I met there. Res is really fun, and while I was there I thought I was having a great time. But now looking back on it, I’ve realised there are a few things that I think Colleges can change and improve on. Overall it was a good experience, I made lifelong friends, it was nice having my food cooked for me. But it was an intense place to live.
Planning my career
I would really love to work in museum archives, maybe as a restorer. I’ve been looking into a Masters at Melbourne University. But now for now the aim is to get my honours, take a year off and do some travel. It’s been a long two years of studying.
My advice for others
For anyone interested in working in or studying arts, I say go for it. In Melbourne especially, because there are many projects happening and lots of funding being distributed. I was really worried in my first year because there are a lot of people who want to work in the arts and there aren’t that many jobs. But now entering my final year I’ve eased into the arts community in Melbourne. That has happened by making friends and networking. I do really love the arts even if it is a scary field to get into.
